Could GLP-1s Help With Asthma? New Study Says It Might

Wait, what are GLP-1s?

GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, are a class of medications originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. But in recent years, they’ve become widely used for weight loss, thanks to how they work: slowing digestion, regulating blood sugar, and reducing appetite (and for many, quieting that constant food noise).

They're not magic, and they’re not for everyone, but for those who respond well, they can be life-changing.

New to all this?

Whether you're just starting your GLP-1 journey or still deciding if it’s right for you, Pen Hub is here for the full picture, from side effects and mindset shifts to what to eat, what to expect, and how to stay on track.

We’ve got free articles, mini podcast episodes (called the PenCast), and real-world guidance, all in one place.

Why would that happen?

There are a few theories. First, GLP-1s help reduce systemic inflammation, which is a known trigger for asthma. They also lead to weight loss, and carrying less weight can take pressure off the lungs and improve overall lung function.

So is it the weight loss? The anti-inflammatory effects? A combination of both? We don’t know for sure yet, but it’s likely layered.

What this means if you have asthma

If you’re using a GLP-1 and noticing that your asthma feels less intense, it’s not just in your head.

This study adds to growing evidence that these medications might offer unexpected benefits beyond appetite control. It doesn’t mean they’re a treatment for asthma, no doctor’s going to prescribe them for that alone, but if you happen to live with both asthma and excess weight, this could be a quiet bonus.

Of course, not everyone will see a difference. And if your asthma feels worse since starting, that’s a separate conversation to have with your prescriber.

The bottom line

You started this medication for your weight. But if it’s helping you breathe easier, too? That’s a win. There’s more research to come, but for now, it’s one more reason to pay attention to how your body responds, not just on the scale, but everywhere else, too.

If you're using a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, and you also happen to have asthma, this might be the first time you’ve heard these two conditions mentioned in the same sentence.

But according to new research from the UK, people using GLP-1s not only lost weight, they also saw better asthma control. Yes, really.

Breathing easier wasn’t the goal, but it happened

This wasn’t a clinical trial, but it was a big real-world study looking at thousands of patients. And the pattern was clear: those on GLP-1 medications were more likely to experience fewer asthma flare-ups, better daily symptom control, and less reliance on steroid tablets.

The drugs weren’t prescribed for asthma. But people noticed the difference anyway.
