Wait, what are GLP-1s?
GLP-1 medications are a new class of drug originally developed to help people manage type 2 diabetes. But they’ve also been shown to support significant weight loss by mimicking a natural hormone that helps control blood sugar and appetite.
You might have seen them online under names like “weight-loss jabs” or “skinny pens”, they’re usually taken as a weekly injection and are designed to help people feel fuller, faster and stay satisfied for longer.
They don’t work like magic, though. GLP-1s are most effective when combined with lifestyle changes, like eating more mindfully and moving your body regularly.
Some of the most well-known GLP-1 medications include semaglutide and tirzepatide, though they go by different brand names depending on the country and dose, the most common names you will hear are Ozempic and Mounjaro. You can find out the differences in the medications here. For now, access through the NHS is limited, but interest is growing fast.
What to know:
Your GP can’t prescribe weight-loss jabs directly. They can only refer you into the specialist-led programme.
There’s a cap on how many people can be referred right now, due to supply and funding limits.
Private prescriptions are still available for those who want to go down that route, but they’re not NHS-funded.
Can you still go private?
Yes, and many people are. If you don’t meet the NHS criteria, or you don’t want to wait for a referral, private clinics and online providers may offer access to GLP-1 weight-loss medication.
Going private means:
You'll still need to meet certain BMI requirements (a BMI over 30), but there's no criteria to have a weight related medical condition.
There’s usually no long waitlist
You’ll still need a prescription and medical screening
Prices vary, but can range from £150 to £300 per month, depending on the provider and medication.
While it’s a faster route, it’s important to make sure you’re working with a regulated service that includes proper medical oversight.
*Everyone’s body and health history is different, so always speak to a qualified professional before starting any new treatment.
Millions are asking, but NHS access to GLP-1 medication is still tightly controlled. Here’s what it really takes to get it for free.
With demand for GLP-1 medications soaring, the NHS is being very selective about who can access weight-loss jabs for free.
Despite talk of a nationwide rollout, most people in the UK still aren’t eligible to get these weekly injections on the NHS. Access is currently restricted through a controlled scheme called the NHS Digital Weight Management Programme, and only certain patients are being referred.
So, who actually qualifies?
Right now, you need to have a BMI over 30 and at least one weight-related health condition, like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. But that’s not all. You also need to be enrolled in the NHS weight-loss programme via your GP, and referrals are not guaranteed.
It’s a structured 12-month programme that includes coaching, lifestyle advice and in a limited number of cases, access to GLP-1 weight-loss medication. These jabs are only prescribed by specialists at hospital-based weight management services, not your local GP surgery.
