Mounjaro Goes Mainstream: NHS GPs Begin Prescribing Weekly Weight-Loss Jab from Today

What if you don’t qualify (yet)?

If you’re not in the first eligibility group, you’re not alone.

NHS England has published interim guidance outlining the future phases of the rollout:

  • June 2026: People with a BMI of 35 to 39.9, plus four of the five listed health conditions, may become eligible.

  • April 2027: The criteria could expand to include those with a BMI over 40, and only three out of the five health conditions.

In total, the NHS estimates that around 3.4 million people will be eligible to access Mounjaro over the next 12 years.

Can I still get it privately?

Yes. Mounjaro continues to be available via private prescription for individuals who meet the general medical criteria, typically, a BMI over 30.

Private access may still be an option for those who don’t yet qualify under the NHS rollout. However, we don’t make recommendations about specific suppliers, and it’s important to speak with a licensed prescriber about your options.

Who qualifies?

NHS England has confirmed that today’s launch will follow a staggered rollout, prioritising patients most in need. That means the first group eligible includes those with:

  • A BMI over 40, and

  • Four out of five of the following conditions:

    • Type 2 diabetes

    • High blood pressure

    • Cardiovascular disease

    • High cholesterol

    • Obstructive sleep apnoea

If you fall into this group, you could now be prescribed tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro) via your GP.

It’s more than just the jab

Those prescribed Mounjaro on the NHS won’t just be handed a pen and sent on their way. The programme also includes ongoing support, including:

  • Regular check-ins with a healthcare provider

  • Guidance on exercise

  • Practical advice on healthy eating habits

The aim is to provide long-term, sustainable outcomes, not just quick wins.

Big news in the world of GLP-1 medications: from today, GPs across England can begin prescribing Mounjaro, the weekly weight-loss injection, to eligible patients through the NHS.

This rollout marks a major milestone in the fight against obesity and metabolic disease, making one of the most talked-about GLP-1 drugs finally available to those who qualify, free at the point of care.
