When quick fixes aren’t enough

Most of the time, sulfur burps are a harmless side effect of slower digestion on GLP-1s. But if they become constant, very foul-smelling, or are joined by symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, or severe bloating, it’s time to check in with your prescriber.

Curious about why burping happens on these medications in the first place? Read our complete guide to burping on Mounjaro and Ozempic here.

1. Sip water throughout the day

Hydration really does matter. Drinking water helps your digestive system keep moving, which can reduce the build-up of gas. A glass after meals may also help “flush through” food more smoothly, giving bacteria less time to produce hydrogen sulfide gas (the culprit behind that rotten-egg smell).

2. Try peppermint or ginger tea

Both peppermint and ginger have long reputations as digestive soothers. Peppermint can help relax your stomach muscles, while ginger may ease nausea. Even if they don’t banish burps completely, they can leave you feeling calmer and more settled.

3. Cut back on fizzy drinks

Sparkling water, Diet Coke, prosecco, they all pump extra gas into your stomach, and on GLP-1s, that gas tends to linger. Many users find that swapping fizzy drinks for still water, herbal tea, or flat juices makes a noticeable difference.

4. Eat smaller meals more often

Big portions take longer to digest, especially on GLP-1s, where your stomach is already in “slow mode.” Smaller, lighter meals not only reduce burping but can also make bloating less intense. Think of it as giving your digestion a helping hand.

5. Don’t lie down straight after eating

If you flop onto the sofa right after dinner, gravity isn’t doing you any favours. Staying upright for at least an hour can help reduce trapped gas from rising back up. A gentle walk can help, too, nothing intense, just enough to get things moving.

6. Freshen up for confidence

This one doesn’t stop burps, but it helps you feel less self-conscious. Brushing your teeth, chewing sugar-free gum, or carrying mints means that even if a burp sneaks out, you’ll feel fresher. Sometimes the confidence boost is half the battle.

7. Track your triggers and what works

Sulfur burps aren’t always random. For some, it’s fizzy drinks. For others, it’s portion size or specific foods. Keeping a quick record of what you eat, when burps happen, and which fixes seem to help can give you a personal playbook.
